Szemrédi Foundation

The Szemredi non-profit, educational Charitable Foundation for the Students of Pannonhalma

The objectives of the “Szemrédi Alapítvány a Pannonhalmi Diákokért” is to help talented students attend this elite school by offering merit and need-based financial aid scholarships to those students whose parents could not afford the boarding school expenses.  As a result, more talented students could receive excellent education, spiritually, academically, morally, emotionally, and socially so that they could make a positive impact for the benefit of the country.

The Pannonhalma Benedictine High School is one of the oldest schools in Europe, a prestigious Roman Catholic Middle and High School. The school is an integral part of the thousand-year-old Pannonhalma Benedictine Archabbey and it is one of the most distinguished secondary schools in Hungary, recognized for academic excellence and diverse extracurricular activities. It is a boys boarding school where about 360 students study for four or six years.

Dr. Zoltán Szemredi and Gabriella Szemredi founded the non-profit foundation for the students of Pannonhalma in Hungary.

The charity has two pillars which makes it unique from most charities.

‘Permanent endowment fund’: This bank account holds donations of money or property for the ongoing support of the students at Pannonhalma.   Only the interest earned becomes available for financial aid scholarships. This core endowment principal amount is kept intact to fund many future years of scholarships.

‘Distributable funds’:  This bank account holds direct donations and interest earned by the endowment fund.  The balance in this account is available for financial aid scholarship distribution for the next school year.

Five member Board of Directors manages the foundation. Three member auditing board adds another layer of scrutiny over the foundation financial activities. Board members are all professionals in various fields, such as law, medicine, education and financial management. Many are alumni of the school.

Board members participate on a volunteer basis, no cost to the charitable foundation. Since the School of Pannonhalma covers the charity’s administrative expenses, 100% of any donation or inheritance will be used for the benefit of the students.

Students eligible for financial aid scholarship are identified by the faculty.  Students along with their parents complete the application for assistance and file it with the Board.  Prior to each school year, the Board decides on the amount of each scholarship as well as the number of students who will be receiving them is based on the distributable funds account balance.

The charitable foundation is an open charity, allowing any individual or company to make monetary or property  donations at any time or as a beneficiary in a will.

Doners may contribute to either or both funds:  ‘Permanent endowment fund’ or ‘Distributable fund’.
